Throughout my years of education at the University of San Diego, I have learned how marketing and communication work together to build a strong foundation for a career in the fast-moving marketing business. Creating effective campaigns requires more than just an understanding of how to analyze data, it also involves being able to connect with people on a deeper level and being able to create those valuable relationships that many marketers crave to have with their audiences. This is where all the skills I gained from my communication major come into play. By understanding how human beings create messages, and how others perceive and interpret them differently, I have learned to design different marketing strategies that can resonate with specific target audiences.
One of the ways communication enhances marketing is by allowing marketers to focus on engaging with their clients on a more personal level, by focusing on their unique communication styles. In communication classes, you learn how to adjust the messages you are outputting and tailor them to fit a diverse group of people, whether it is targeting analytical thinkers or more emotional decision-makers who respond better to storytelling. For example, understanding how to segment audiences and use the right tone, can be helpful for marketers since it allows them to create targeted campaigns that help them grab attention and build customer loyalty. According to an article done by Forbes, studies have shown that authentic communication is key to creating successful marketing strategies.
Another critical skill that I have gained from communication is the ability to build and maintain relationships. Marketing is all about being able to collaborate within groups, whether it's brainstorming creative campaigns with a team or maintaining long-term relationships with clients. Many of my communication courses have taught me how to respond to any conflicts that may arise in team dynamics, as well as the ability to use persuasive speaking to promote my ideas. I’ve also developed public speaking skills, which can be challenging for many people. I believe it’s a crucial skill for marketers to have because presenting ideas confidently is a big part of meetings and campaign planning. Being able to communicate clearly and effectively makes a huge difference in sharing your vision and gaining support. For more information on this, Peregrine Communications talks more about how effective communication is key to gaining trust and building relationships, which is an essential skill in marketing.
So, I truly believe that combining marketing strategy with effective and genuine communication is an effective way to succeed in the field of marketing. By maintaining and using the insights and skills from both my marketing major and my communication major, I am confident in my ability to craft campaigns that inspire, influence, and connect with audiences in meaningful ways.
